When I have a chance, I will update this for newer versions of Outlook Express.
Preview Pane Disable the Preview Pane. The reason for this is that the Preview Pane actually opens the email message. An email may contain a worm, which is triggered by opening the email.

To disable the Preview Pane:

  1. Click on "View" in the menu.
  2. Select "Layout..." from the list.
  3. In the "Preview Pane" section, remove the checkmark next to "Show preview pane".
  4. Click "Apply".
  5. Click "OK".

Note: This will disable the preview pane for all folders.
Email Format Avoid using HTML formatting for messages. Plain text, while ugly, is safer.

To disable HTML formatting:

  1. Click on "Tools" in the menu bar.
  2. Select "Options..." from the list.
  3. Click on the "Send" tab.
  4. In the "Sending" section, remove the checkmark next to "Reply to messages using the format in which they were sent".
  5. In the "Mail Sending Format" section, select "Plain Text" as the option.
Automatic
Email
Checking		 If you have MailWasher installed, you will want to disable automatic email checking:
  1. Click on "Tools" in the menu bar.
  2. Select "Options..." from the list.
  3. Click on the "General" tab.
  4. In the "Send/Receive Messages" section, remove the checkmarks next to "Send and receive messages at start up" and "Check for messages every...".
